Utah - Brigham Young University College of Nursing

(Last edited: Tuesday, February 17, 2015, 2:54 PM)

Brigham Young University

Name of Sim Center: Mary Jane Rawlinson Geertsen Nursing Learning Center
Location: Provo, UT
Sim Center Highlights: The original 6,000-square-foot Nursing Learning Center opened in 1998 and, at the time, its computer programs, manikins, equipment, and medical supplies were state of the art. In 2012-2013 there were over 11,000 scheduled student encounters to the nursing learning center. Thanks to a generous gift from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation, the center has been completely renovated during Spring/Summer 2014 and expanded to approximately 10,000 square feet. The center now includes a student study area, five (5) clinical exam rooms, six (6) full-simulation experience rooms, a 9-bed unit which is sub-dividable, two (2) procedure/skill training rooms, four debriefings rooms, 4-bed walk-in lab, 19-station computer lab, and a 4-station central control center. Included is a utility storage corridor that provides access to the back of the clinical exam rooms and the full-simulation rooms allowing standardized patients to enter and for staff to easily bring supplies from the prep area. The nursing learning center contains many cameras and microphones to capture the various simulation experiences and allow post-experience review. Much of the technology is wireless with easy and quick access to data, the internet, and nursing programs to facilitate research and the education of undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
