University of Virginia

Name of Sim Center: Clinical Simulation Learning Center
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Sim Center Highlights: The Clinical Simulation Learning Center (CSLC) at the University of Virginia School of Nursing was established in 1990.  In 1995, The Theresa A. Thomas Intensive Care Simulation Unit was added to the Center.  The CSLC  is presently approximately 3,800 Sq Ft, including the 2-bed Intensive Care Simulation Unit as well as 2 Procedural Labs with 12 beds, and 1 Physical Assessment Lab with 8 stations.  Work is in progress to expand to a little over 7,000 Sq Ft.  This expansion will incorporate an Operating Room Suite, a Virtual Reality Unit and a 2-bed Simulation Research Unit within the Center.  The goal also is to add an additional 8-station Physical Assessment Lab as well as upgrade the existing procedural labs.  The ultimate goals of the CSLC at UVA is to:
1. Enhance point-of-learning and clinical practice through the use of high-fidelity simulation resources and standardized patients; and
2.  Become a Regional Simulation Teaching Resource and Research Center for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

UVA CSLC Philosophy: The UVA Clinical Simulation Learning Center will provide students and healthcare providers broad access to the practice environment, directly at the point of learning. Students can immediately apply skills and concepts that would otherwise become diluted between classroom time and clinical practice. The thoughtful use of simulation technologies in the CSLC ensures that students and clinicians will acquire critical skills and judgement and will maintain competency.
