use of sim lab other than for simulation
by vickie valenziano - Thursday, February 4, 2010, 3:03 PM

I need some suggestions on using the simulation equipment, room, and case studies for a nursing program other than during simulation.

I have used the monitor for rhythms, and case studies for classroom, but would like to know how others are using their equipment and rooms.

We are a community college in a small town, but we have partnered with some of the Home Health Agencies for a place to do their yearly competencies. The lab is set up as stations where the nurses rotate through and are checked off. They use it for 2-3 days and all their nurses come in to complete their competencies. This helps them out so that they are not traveling to all of their different sites and setting up something for competencies. In turn we use their agency for one of our clincal sites for students.

We have one of the local hospitals using our SimMan once/month as needed for part of their orientation for new nurse employees.  We use 4 - 5 of the NLN scenarios, I run Simmy and the hospital educators do the debriefings.  We use a diabetic hypoglycemia and the educators get to review and reinforce the specific hospital orders, etc.  Another one we use is the blood transfusion reaction.

We have also had one of the local community college's replace a clinical day with simulation when they had a staffing issue.  Their students have nothing like this, and loved it.  We did charge for this, though nominal.  We have not charged the hospital, since we have a reciprocal relationship with them (not sure if this was the right thing or not).

Do you have a contract that you drew up for the agency if they use your simulators? We are looking for one to use so that it will protect us should some simulator get broken. Thank you Jean
