Identification of the Problem
Peripheral or site edema can be difficult to replicate for physical assessment on a simulator. Simulation accessories are available in the form of obesity suits and peripheral edema leggings, but the cost of these items prohibit purchase for some simulation centers. As a solution to this issue, simulation faculty created a durable, low cost solution to replicate peripheral or site edema which can be re-used in multiple scenarios for various levels of learners. For example, this solution can be used on adult or child simulators in various scenarios at multiple learner levels to represent edema of a surgical site, peripheral edema resulting from heart failure, edema from an allergic reaction, etc.
Unique Idea
Place a piece of memory foam under Ted hose, nylon stockings, ACE wrap, or surgical wrap to simulate the effect of edema during physical assessment on a simulator. The severity of edema needed can be replicated by using varied densities or layers of memory foam. Learners can then manipulate the edematous area to determine the severity of edema present on assessment. The simulated edema may be re-used in various scenarios, with learners of various levels, and on various simulator types.

3. Scissors
Steps to Creating the Solution
1. Select piece of memory foam which replicates the severity of edema required for the scenario.
2. Use scissors to cut the memory foam to the size required for the scenario.
3. Place the memory foam on the simulator extremity/area in which edema is to be assessed.
4. Apply Ted hose, nylon stockings, ACE wrap, or surgical wrap over the memory foam to secure it to the simulator extremity/site.
