manikin update

Has anyone had to do manikin updates?  And if so how often?  We've had our Sim Man updated and after many issues he ran for 1 day (without bowel sounds working). Now his heart sounds are very abnormal and his blood pressure is way off.  We were told to run a manikin update to resolve.  Just wondering if this will be a normal occurance.  Very frustrating.

Are you referring to updating the software version used on your simulator? If so, what type simulator are you using?

yes, on our SimMan (laerdal). Our upgraded SimMan returned to us last week. We have had to "update" it 3 times since its return... the last time it went haywire during the middle of a simulation. IT prompted us to "update" it. Concerned about having to update so often and esp having a simulation interrupted due to this. Anyone else with similar experiences?

Have you talked to your Laerdal education representative? Maybe they can help? In the past, we upgraded the software and had so much trouble that I had to sit in the lab and reprogram every program.None of our prior programs would work and would not "convert" so it was ALOT of work. I am leary of going for the 3.4 software upgrade and thats why I asked you.

We upgraded the software to Sim Man version 3.4, and the manikin was upgraded/refurbished internally.
After running the manikin update software, he seemed back to normal. The bowel sounds are still much fainter than before. I'm just wondering if this is something that has to be done on a regular basis. We had to interrupt our scenario for the 30 minutes that it took to complete.

Normally, you will only have to do a software update/upgrade about once a year.  It does take time to do them, but with regular maintance and updates to your simulators, they will last longer and be more beneficial to your students.

Johnna,

I have done lots of upgrades as a former Product Repair Specialist with Laerdal and I will tell you that they can be tricky. The key is the speed that the upgrade takes. If it locks on goes very quickly, it won't be totally correct. The upgrade should take a while to start and then progress slowly. Hope this helps.
